“So what if the Italian invented pizza, we have taught them a lesson in Home delivery!” – read a famous tweet doing rounds in the social media.
Well the case of two Italians killing Indian Fishermen and then fleeing to their country without facing trial in India is shocking and shameful to say the least. The question which needs to be asked is why is the Italian Government taking us so contemptuously? Well the simple answer is that Indians have been little too feeble and far too diplomatic in handling foreign relations. Our weak handling of Pakistan and militancy spread by it has made the world believe strongly about Indian Government that though they are experts in heightening drama and expressing anger, little is done at the ground level.
We once again welcomed the PM of Pakistan when he came to pay a visit to Ajmer Sharif even when a month back the Pakistani troops had beheaded two Indian soldiers violating the cease fire on the border. Later this month, the Pakistani Parliament even passed a resolution against India’s hanging of Afzal Guru – the prime accused in Indian Parliament attack that took place on 26/11 once again openly reiterating there support to terrorism blatantly .
Over the last 25 years, a series of controversies, starting from Ottavio Quattrocchi, the alleged conduit for the maligned Bofors gun deal to the bribery charges in the $750 million AgustaWestland chopper deal and this shooting of two innocent Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast—all have an Italian connection.
In fact the two Italians Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone shot the two fishermen (father-son) without even warning them. The Indian government had allowed them to go home to vote in their elections even when the Italian Constitution unlike ours has an option of voting remotely if one wants to take part in the election and that too at the personal behest of the Italian envoy Ambassador Daniele Mancini. It was good to see the prompt response of the Indian Government in this regard as it was criticized quite vociferously by both – the Government as well as the Opposition alike. Mr. Jaitley was right in quoting James Bond - “It happens once, it’s chance, twice is coincidence, three times and it’s enemy action.” In my view, this is a mere reflection of the respect Italian Government has shown towards the Highest Court of India. It was good to see that Mrs. Sonia Gandhi who is a born Italian retaliated by saying squarely that No Country can take India casually.
I hope the Indian Government sticks to its word as the PM said that there will “consequences” if the Italian marines aren’t returned to India and make the world understand that it’s not a soft nation which would take a slap on its Global Reputation so casually. I would further hope that all the separatists of Kashmir are dealt with an iron hand who demanded Afzal Guru’s body to be handed over to his family. It’s high time to act, mere dramatic reactions won’t give us solutions to these problems.
